Within each Task, the ACS separates what you need to demonstrate into three element types:
Oral exams focus almost entirely on Knowledge and Risk Management elements, while the flight portion of your checkride tests the Skill elements. A DPE who asks "what would you do if X happened" mid-task is testing Risk Management, not just Knowledge — which is why memorized answers alone don't hold up under follow-up questions.
Designated Pilot Examiners are required to test to the ACS — they can't ask outside of it, and they're expected to cover every Task before signing off your certificate.
